  1. I don't think anybody meeting me or my wife will consider us מטורפים
All my extended family including our holocaust Survivor parents covered all surfaces in the kitchen with something. For those who grew up in such an environment, it became a powerful force of nostalgia; if things are not covered it isn't Pesach'dig.

Look out for a different take on the same yontif'dige preparations that you so disparagingly label as crazy, in the New York Times and read all about unwashed apples etc. Their reporter has been roaming all over Borough Park...

Then you might consider the different reactions of seculars in Israel to the seculars in America in reacting to our deeply ingrained family traditions.

I am confident that my 8 children and 25 grand children will continue with this tradition of covering every surface, not out of some kind of 'tiruf' but out of lovingly trying to recreate the atmosphere felt in Zeidy & bubby's home during Pesach time.

My confidence is based on the fact that our einiklach are begging their parents to have a chance to help Bubby prepare for Pesach in her covered up kitchen, including the phone.

  2. I think this is less about the teruf of people who either
stringently observe or wish to honor traditions.
It's more about profiteering off of those sentiments
by selling worthess junk to trusting or naive people.
Similarly, nobody ridicules faithful Jews who not
only pray for but also study about the messiah. But
when the event gets co-opted by politicians for a clearly
political agenda - well that's a horse of a different color.

  3. You are just incorrect in your observations.
Nobody forces anybody to buy, anything. Profiteering by definition is taking advantage of people who have no choice i.e. selling yogurt for triple the price after cornering the market(see Wikipedia "Profiteering" is a pejorative term for the act of making a profit by methods considered unethical). Your choice of words This person has an idea to make life easier for people who observe a certain standards.
Similar religious gadgets are flooding the markets in heavily Jewish shopping areas in NYC. Your choice of the word 'profiteering' on a Jewish merchant trying eke out a living by making a chachka'le, is more telling about you than about him.

I don't think this post was about profiteering which is an even more offensive term, it was more on the tiruf theme that has been a regular feature on the blog. I'll choose the first insult over the latter

That is not to say that there is no tiruf in the Chardedi world; there is plenty.
But you seem so far disconnected from real contemporary religious life that you can't tell the difference when its real and when its meshigas.

  4. So here you got it in today's New York Times without the derogatory terms of 'tiruf or profiteering' whatsoever.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/03/nyregion/ahead-of-passover-traditions-transform-borough-park.html?_r=1&ref=nyregion

"It is also evident in a seasonal uptick in employment, because the neighborhood has no shortage of experts in the finer points of fastidiously keeping kosher who supplement their livelihoods during Passover.

“God in Borough Park is like steel in Bethlehem,” joked Alexander Rapaport, a Hasid who runs Masbia, a soup kitchen organization.

The first item a customer notices when entering Gourmet Glatt, a sparkling new emporium that resembles a Whole Foods, is not food, but a tall stack of Easy-Off. That is because among the first things a Hasidic homemaker does before preparing holiday dishes is clean the oven two or three times to make sure not even a speck of chametz from the past year contaminates those dishes.

Once inside the market there are other signs of how the holiday, known in Hebrew and Yiddish as Pesach, is observed with scrupulous rigorousness. The shelves are lined with brown butcher paper so that Passover products are not exposed to the year-round boards. "

Must be that the brown butcher paper supplier is a profiteer on the cheshbon of the
